Born in Ocala, Florida in 1951, Dean is a self-taught artist who is influenced by primitive and Native American cultures. Coming to Maine in 1979, Dean founded the Northwoods Survival School and is an accomplished bow hunter. He is proficient in navigation and orientation, handmade tools, birch bark canoes, fire starting and shelter building. He is also a self-taught painter. In 1998, Dean sold four sculptures to Foxwoods of Native Americans and has written and illustrated articles for Maine Sportsman, Primitive Bowhunter Magazine, and Wilderness Way Magazine, amongst others. Dean's work is about as unique as it comes.
